What I Have Been Watching

We do not have cable or a DVR, but thanks to Netflix and Hulu, I can pretty much watch whatever I want whenever I want.  I am not typically very millenial but I am very much a modern entertainment consumer, often "binge" watching a show.  I don't (typically) sit and watch for hours, but I do tend to power through one series before moving onto another one.  I either stream Netflix through our Wii, the computer, or my kindle fire (I plug in headphones and watch while washing dishes!), or I watch hulu on the computer.  Below is what I have been watching for the past couple of years.

Category:  Current shows, and I am (mostly) caught up
Psych (I am not quite live but have seen as much as I can on hulu)
Parks and Recreation (this show makes me laugh out loud)
30 Rock (this was current but the series finale was earlier this spring)
The Office (only 2 more episodes!  I will miss this show)
Bones (I am not as smart or hyper-rational as Brennan, but I definitely identify with her character)
Downton Abbey (somehow I missed the most recent Christmas Special, although I do know what happens)
Sherlock (BBC version, of course)

Category:  Current Shows, but I am behind one season!
Doctor Who (episodes starting in 2005, with Doctors #9, 10, and 11)
How I Met Your Mother (This show is funny but I am ready or it to wrap up already)
White Collar
Portlandia (I have already watched this series twice and plan to again.  LOVE IT.  Put a bird on it!)

Battlestar Gallactica (I actually got Brandon to watch this one with me, and he is also a huge fan.  I have contemplated dressing as Starbuck for Halloween but I haven't yet planned far enough in advance)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Yes, it started in 1997.  I LOVE IT.  And now have sort-of crushes on men who are now late forties/early fifties)
Arrested Development (I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEW RELEASE!)
Alias (watching this made me feel like I was back in high school)
Angel (not as good as Buffy, but still very fun to watch)
Firefly (I am not a super fan but might be if I watched it another time)
Numbers (Math Geek solves crime.  YES!)

If you care to have more details about our television journey:

When we moved into our current house four years ago, we didn't elect to install cable or satellite for the TV.  We still had a TV, a handful of DVD's, and a subscription to Netflix that allowed us two DVD's at a time, but streaming to the Wii was not yet available.  We were following a growing number of shows while at our old house and left behind a litany of unwatched episodes on our very full DVR.  Although now I wish I had caught up on as much as possible through hulu, I didn't think to at the time and we ended up just missing the season finales after our move in April. 

When Ian was born that fall, I found myself a little bored (In case you didn't know, newborns tend to sleep a LOT during the day.  No promises about the night time, though.) and started walking about a mile to the grocery store to get exercise and check out the Redbox movie selection.  The options were less than stellar, I'll tell you.  But I survived by adding my paltry collection of DVDs to the mix (Ocean's Eleven, Much Ado About Nothing, The Princess Bride, The Importance of Being Earnest, Elf).  My mother-in-law was due to arrive in December to watch Ian for a week while I went back to work and before day care started, and we felt bad that the entertainment options would be quite limited.  The 2010 Winter Olympics were also gearing up to start in February, and we decided that we wanted to be able to watch at least some of those.  We got an antena, but the reception is spotty at best.  We didn't end up watching very much until we started streaming Netflix through our Wii (yes, we still have one of those).
